Exclusive: Whelan reacts to Poveda update ahead of Leeds v Hull
Noel Whelan has been left frustrated that Leeds United new boy Ian Poveda has not made any impact since his move in January.
The former Leeds striker and lifelong fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor, says the 20-year-old has done nothing to strengthen the club’s push for promotion back to the Premier League.
The winger joined Bielsa’s men from Manchester City but after sitting on the bench for his first two games at the club, he has not featured in a matchday squad since.
Football Insider revealed yesterday that the young forward has failed to convince Marcelo Bielsa of his fitness levels, with the Argentine boss placing huge demands on his players.
Asked why he thought Poveda was not featuring, Whelan told Football Insider: “I have absolutely no idea. He was in the squad when he signed, now he’s back out of it.
“I know he’s one for the future but you strengthen your squad in January to push the rest of the other teams with players that are going to add quality to the squad and options.

“Right now they’ve got two players there who are not an option, we’ve hardly seen anything of Poveda, he’s hardly got on the field. He’s one that looked really good when he’s coming in but has he strengthened the side? Not really.”
Poveda played in just one single first-team game during his time at Manchester City, featuring for the full 90 minutes against Burton Albion in the League Cup last season.
He has played for every level of England’s youth side up to the under-20s, with four appearances for the Young Lions.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan admits that he is very worried after an update on a senior star.
