Noel Whelan has insisted new Leeds United signing Rodrigo will score bucketloads of goals in the upcoming season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed he was not too bothered that the centre-forward wasted one glorious chance and another decent one while playing for Spain in their 1-1 draw against Germany last night.
Rodrigo played the full 90 minutes for his country and Whelan was impressed at what he saw from Leeds’ club-record signing.
He explained that the centre-forward, 29, brings far more to the table for Leeds than just penalty-box prowess and his all-round game makes him a huge asset.
Asked if he was concerned by Rodrigo’s wasted chances, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yes and no, I think because we’re a team that hopefully can get goals from different areas, a bit like Patrick Bamford you have to appreciate the work he does off the ball as well.
“You only have to look at [Roberto] Firmino, he’s one of those players that without him in the side they don’t get as many chances, he kind of an unsung hero is Firmino.
“He’s very intelligent, like Rodrigo, he gets into positions where he can’t be marked, he turns on the ball and makes things happen. I’ve got absolutely no doubt in my mind that the prolific Rodrigo will turn up at Leeds, even though he hasn’t been prolific throughout his career.
“He’s a different kind of striker but I do think think he’ll cause defenders problems more than just scoring goals. You’ve got to look at strikers and what they bring the team and the result. I think he’ll fit in absolutely perfectly at Leeds United.
“I’ve no doubt he’ll get a better tally this season than he has done for most of his career.”
