Exclusive: Whelan reveals the two Kalvin Phillips scenarios after Leeds transfer blow

Noel Whelan has insisted there are only two Kalvin Phillips transfer scenarios remaining in the final 10 days of the window – Leeds cash in or hand him an improved contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker believes Leeds’ best chance of replacing Phillips has evaporated after their failed pursuit of Romaine Sawyers.

The Yorkshire giants were among the clubs who registered their interest in the 27-year-old but he opted to snub Leeds, Celtic and other clubs to join West Brom from Brentford.

There has yet to be a resolution over Phillips’ future after he rejected a new contract offer from Leeds earlier in the summer amid strong interest from Premier League clubs led by Aston Villa.

“There are two scenarios with Kalvin Phillips. Either Leeds need to sell, or offer him the money to keep him for at least another season,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“It is not a risk to give him a contract with more money, but it would secure a very good player who is the best anchorman in the Championship. Leeds tried to sign Romaine Sawyers, who I believe is the second best in that position, but he has decided to join West Brom.

“There have been rumblings that Kalvin could sit out the season on the same contract, and then move, but he deserves to be one of Leeds’ top earners. He’s their most important player.”

Phillips has played a full part for United in pre-season and is expected to start their Championship opener away to Bristol City on Sunday.

Aston Villa have made attempts to sign the midfielder this summer, and have offered him a massive pay rise, but Leeds have snubbed their interest so far.
