Noel Whelan has claimed Helder Costa has failed to live up to his £15million price tag since his Leeds United arrival.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker who watches all of the team’s matches delivered a damning verdict on the winger’s contribution.
Costa has yet to score a league goal for United since joining on a loan-to-buy move from Wolves that will become permanent for £15million next summer.
The Portugese winger was a second-half substitute for the first eight league matches of the campaign before being named in the starting XI for the last four as a result of Pablo Hernandez being injured.
“He has played well in just one of those four games,” Whelan told Football Insider. “It’s not good enough. He was our headline signing and he’s not living up to it.
“£15million is a hell of a lot of money when you consider his performances. There has been the occasional glimpse of brilliance, but he doesn’t create enough chances.
“The way he is playing, you wouldn’t be paying £15million for him. I’ve not seen him have one good game away from home.
“Leeds will be expecting a lot more from him. He’s been a big disappointment so far.”
Costa has broken his Leeds scoring duck, but that came in an early-season League Cup tie against Stoke City when both clubs played weakened sides.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have suffered a major new injury blow to star player.
