Noel Whelan has revealed he expects Jack Harrison to be axed from the Leeds team for their Championship showdown against Barnsley.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider editor Wayne Veysey, the ex-United forward believes Marcelo Bielsa will hand Helder Costa his first league start for the club in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off.
Whelan believes Bielsa will have reassessed his attacking options at Thorp Arch during the international break following the home defeat to Swansea City.
The pundit believes Costa can provide fresh penetration to the team.
“Helder Costa has a chance to show the manager what he can do during the international break at Thorp Arch,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He’s not in the Portugal squad so has had the perfect opportunity to win Bielsa over with his attitude and commitment.
“Because of the defeat to Swansea, there is an opportunity for Costa to convince Bielsa he should start at the weekend.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts ahead of Jack Harrison, as Leeds need guile, cleverness and someone who can penetrate packed defences.
“Harrison has improved this season and has been in form, but Costa is a Portugal international who Leeds have signed for £15million. He can make a real difference.”
Harrison has started all six of Leeds’ Championship matches this season.
Costa has been a substitute in each of those games, with his only starts for the club coming in the League Cup.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that Burnley have lined up transfer missions to sign Elland Road ace as talks underway.
