Exclusive: Whelan touts 'PL-ready' star signing for Leeds after big development

Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United to sign a “Premier League-ready” goalkeeper after Illan Meslier was given the nod when Kiko Casilla was for the first time.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the 20-year-old does not have enough experience for the top flight.

Meslier retained his place in between the sticks, despite the return of Casilla, as Leeds edged past bottom-of-the-table Barnsley 1-0 on Thursday even to leave them just one point short of promotion.

Football Insider understands that the club will activate their option to buy the French goalkeeper who is currently on loan at Elland Road.

Promotion is but a game away for Marcelo Bielsa’s side and Whelan is already looking ahead to the summer transfer window.

“Meslier has hardly been tested and we will get tested a lot more in the Premier League,” he told Football Insider.

“Is Meslier just right at this level because personally I think we need somebody a lot more experienced between the sticks. That is no disrespect to him because he still has loads of time on his hands to get better.

“Aston Villa went out and got Pepe Reina and we need somebody between the sticks next season that is Premier League-ready.”

Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinez is under consideration but the shot-stopper’s stock is rising after a number of eye-catching performances in the absence of the injured Bernd Leno.

Football Insider understands that Martinez is currently one of the lowest earners in their the Gunners first team squad.
