Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has gone to a new level after discovering a surprise turn of pace.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds forward and boyhood Whites fan delivered his verdict after Bamford scored his third Premier League goal of the season.

The 27-year-old scored 16 goals in the Championship last campaign but came under criticism from Leeds fans for missing key chances.

However, Whelan believes there have been a few subtle differences that can be attributed to Bamford’s transformation.

He told Football Insider: “The thing is he’s not doing anything any different to what he was doing last year.

“The only difference is he’s converting the chances that come his way.

“He’s still as strong, still as a quick. He’s got that surprise turn of pace that we didn’t know he had.

“We saw it yesterday when he drove into the box with a little touch inside, turn of pace and he gets a shot off and it’s a great save by the keeper Ramsdale.

“He’s doing everything right and the thing is he never gets frustrated. He makes runs and the ball doesn’t come but he’s always positive and doing the right thing that’s required, playing on the shoulders, winning his headers, bringing people into play.

“It’s all about the delivery as well. If you get the right kind of delivery from wide areas and he wasn’t scoring those goals I would be questioning. The fact is he’s full of confidence and believes in his ability and the chances that come his way, he’s putting them in the back of the net.

“It wasn’t an easy chance either. His movement between the two centre-halves was fantastic, the header across Ramsdale who went in the opposite direction was clinical.

“That’s what he is right now, he’s a clinical striker at the minute.”
