Exclusive: Wigan Athletic and Plymouth Argyle race to sign Christian Saydee

Wigan Athletic and Plymouth Argyle are battling it out to sign Portsmouth forward Christian Saydee, sources have told Football Insider.

The League One duo are exploring loan and potentially permanent deals for the attacker.

Saydee, 23, helped Portsmouth secure Championship survival last season, scoring three goals in 29 appearances.

The forward joined Pompey from Bournemouth in the summer of 2023 and played a key role in their promotion from League One in his debut campaign.

Wigan and Plymouth eye Saydee

Saydee started just 10 Championship games for John Mousinho’s side last season, as he struggled to cement himself as the first-choice centre forward.

The 23-year-old came through at Bournemouth and had loan spells at Poole, Weymouth, Burton, and Shrewsbury, before his move along the south coast to Portsmouth.

If Saydee were to make the switch to Plymouth, he would be playing under former Watford boss Tom Cleverley.

Football Insider exclusively revealed last week (13 June) that Plymouth had opted for Cleverley, rather than appointing Jack Wilshere, who was interviewed for the position.

As for Wigan, Ryan Lowe took the managerial role back in March, but the Latics still ended the League One campaign in a disappointing 15th place.

Ajax tracking Stoke defender

Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed that Ajax are tracking highly-rated Stoke City defender Jaden Dixon.

The Dutch giants have been scouting Dixon extensively and the England Under-18 international is one of a number of players on their wanted shortlist.

Dixon, who is equally adept at right-back and centre-back, broke into the Stoke first team last season and has made six appearances in all competitions for the Championship club.

In the league, the 18-year-old came on as a late substitute twice, and he started all four of the Potters’ Carabao Cup ties.
