Exclusive: Wolves’ January transfer plans after Rob Edwards appointment

Rob Edwards is unlikely to receive an abundance of funds to utilise in the January transfer window at Wolves, sources have told Football Insider.

Edwards is set to take over at Molineux imminently, after Middlesbrough gave him permission to enter talks with the Premier League outfit.

Wolves sacked Vitor Pereira after a winless start to the season in the Premier League, and the club currently sit bottom of the table, eight points adrift of safety.

However, despite the fact that their top-flight status is hanging in the balance, sources say that the hierarchy at the Midlands side are unwilling to spend big when the window reopens.

Wolves will look to utilise loans with Championship looming

Sources say that Wolves could look to make some loan signings in the January window rather than risking permanent additions.

Therefore, if they are relegated to the Championship, they won’t be burdened with highly-paid players who they would then need to offload.

The Molineux outfit have an uphill task retaining their Premier League status, so could spend the upcoming window preparing for a campaign in the second tier.

Wolves may look to sign domestic-based players who would stay with the club in the Championship, and help them earn an immediate return to the top flight.

Wolves believe Rob Edwards can connect with fans

Meanwhile, Wolves are finalising the appointment of Edwards as they feel he can get the fans behind the team straight away, sources have told Football Insider.

The hierarchy at the club also believe that the Middlesbrough boss will secure instant promotion back to the Premier League if the Midlands club are relegated this season.

As well as his spell as a player, Edwards had a stint as interim manager at Wolves back in 2016, taking charge of two Championship games after the sacking of Walter Zenga.

The 42-year-old is from the area, supports Wolves and has very close links to the club, as a result of his time at Molineux.
