Exclusive: Wolves to back Rob Edwards as January transfer plan revealed

Wolves are expected to back Rob Edwards with the necessary funds to make new signings in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider

Edwards has been confirmed as the new Wolves boss after deciding to leave his role at Middlesbrough just months after joining the Championship club.

The 42-year-old old takes over at Molineux with the West Midlands side eight points from safety at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Sources say Edwards is likely to be backed with cash to bring in new signings, with the January window set to open in around seven weeks’ time.

Wolves’ hierarchy are understood to be willing to provide the funding for new arrivals as they look to give the new manager the best chance of helping them avoid relegation.

How much did Wolves spend last January?

Edwards has been appointed as Vitor Pereira’s replacement following the miserable start to the campaign.

Pereira was sacked after Wolves lost 3-0 to Fulham at Craven Cottage on 1 November, having failed to win any of his 10 Premier League games in charge this season.

The Portuguese boss took over at Molineux in a similar situation last December before leading the club to top-flight survival.

Wolves were the second-highest spenders in the Premier League behind Manchester City in the latest January window, having backed Pereira with three new signings.

Nasser Djiga, Marshall Munetsi and Emmanuel Agbadou arrived through the door, taking their spending to more than £40million in the mid-season window.

It is believed Molineux chiefs are willing to back Edwards in the upcoming January window depending on Wolves’ standing in the table at the turn of the year.

Wolves made accounting move to avoid PSR blow

Wolves’ spending has been restricted in recent years after coming close to breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105m of losses over a rolling three-year period.

In a bid to avoid a spending breach, Wolves have sold multiple stars over the past couple of years, leading to a decline in quality on the pitch.

However, spending money on new signigns in the upcoming January window wouldn’t automatically see the club breach the PSR rules this season.

Wolves moved their accounting deadline from 31 May to 30 June earlier this year, opening up the possibility for them to sell a player before they submit their accounts in the summer.

That was an option they took up in the latest transfer window after Matheus Cunha was sold to Manchester United in June, with Ruben Amorim’s side activating his £62.5m release clause.

Edwards’ first game in charge of Wolves will come against Crystal Palace on 22 November at Molineux.
