Gary O’Neil won’t be given the chance to get his business done early at Wolves
Wolves are unlikely to make any summer signings before the start of June as they navigate the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider’s Insider Track Podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that a striker signing would have likely put the Molineux club in breach of those Financial Fair Play rules.
Gary O’Neil made no secret of his desire to sign a striker in the January transfer window but no such move materialised due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.
Football Insider revealed last week (3 February) that Wolves held talks over deals for both Yuri Alberto and Armando Broja but were unable to finalise a move due to their strict budget.
Premier League clubs are only allowed to lose £105million over a three-season period under PSR – and it is believed that the Midlands club remain close to that threshold despite last summer’s fire sale.
If found guilty of a breach, Wolves could face a punishment similar to Everton’s 10-point deduction in November 2023.
O’Neil’s side are unlikely to make a move for a new striker or any other position before 1 June – when a new year in terms of club accounts begins.
Any player sales made before that date can be included in the accounts for the previous year.
Football Insider revealed on Friday (9 February) that Wolves may have to sell star man Pedro Neto this summer to unlock funds for their own deals this summer.
It is believed manager O’Neil remains fully patient and understanding about the situation at Molineux despite having his hands tied since arriving last year (2023).
Despite their poor financial situation, Wolves sit 10th in the Premier League table with 15 games remaining this term.
They are next in action against struggling Brentford on Saturday (10 February).
