Exclusive: Wolves working on deal to sign right-back

Wolves are working behind the scenes to sign a new right-back this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Vitor Pereira’s side are aiming to bring in a replacement for Nelson Semedo, after the Portuguese defender refused to sign a new deal at the club.

Sources say that the right-back position is now a priority for Wolves, as they look to fill the void left by their departing captain.

Semedo is still currently a free agent after leaving the Midlands club at the end of June, but is expected to announce that he has signed a contract elsewhere in the coming weeks.

Wolves desperate to replace ‘influential’ Semedo

With Semedo choosing to walk away from a contract offer, Wolves not only have to replace him in a footballing sense, but also replace his character.

The 31-year-old was made captain at Molineux by Gary O’Neil just before his departure in December last year, and was influential in the second half of the season.

Semedo showed leadership to help drag Wolves away from any potential relegation battle, and has proved his consistency during his five years at the club.

Last season, the right-back started 32 out of the 38 Premier League games, so Vitor Pereira will be desperate to replace such an important member of his squad.

‘Sunderland make Patterson U-turn after Johnstone move’

Meanwhile, Sunderland have reportedly made a U-turn on their decision surrounding the sale of Anthony Patterson this summer.

That is according to their former chief scout Mick Brown, who claims that Regis Le Bris is open to keeping the 25-year-old in the North East.

The Black Cats had previously planned to bring in a nailed-on first-choice goalkeeper, which would have facilitated Patterson’s exit amid interest from the likes of Southampton.

However, the addition of Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone would more likely see them drum up competition for the number-one shirt between their two options.
