Exclusive: Wrexham block Josh Windass from rejoining Rangers

Wrexham have no plans to sell Josh Windass in the January transfer window amid interest from Rangers, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship club are keen to keep hold of their best players as they look to mount a bid for promotion to the Premier League.

Windass, 31, joined Wrexham last summer following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday and signed a three-year contract which runs until 2028.

His former club Rangers have tentatively explored the possibility of re-signing the attacking midfielder, seven-and-a-half years after he left Ibrox in 2018.

This comes after Football Insider revealed in July that Rangers were interested in re-signing Windass as a free agent after being alerted to his availability.

Wrexham respond to Josh Windass interest

Despite interest from a number of Championship clubs as well as Rangers, Windass opted to sign for Wrexham and aid in their Premier League promotion bid.

So far this season, the 31-year-old has scored six goals and provided three assists in 19 league appearances as his new club sit 10th in the league table.

With just three points separating them from sixth-placed Preston, Wrexham remain hopeful of mounting a playoff push in the second half of the season.

As a result, they aim to keep hold of their players including Windass, while the likes of James McClean and Jacob Mendy have also been linked with moves away.

Rangers plot move to sign Windass in January

Rangers’ interest in Windass is long-term, having missed out on his signature during the summer, but there are growing suggestions he could be set to return.

Despite Wrexham’s reluctance to lose him, the Ibrox club remain keen to bring him back to Scottish football as they aim to bolster their squad in January.

Football Insider revealed in October that Danny Rohl wants to strengthen his Rangers squad with at least three new additions in the January window.

Meanwhile, Windass has previously worked with Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, and could be tempted into a reunion with his former boss, at his former club.

Phil Parkinson has no plans to lose his best players, but given the growing interest from Rangers, they may have to battle to keep hold of him.
