Expert: Aston Villa have ‘Callum Wilson in their ranks’ as ‘amazing’ claim issued

Ollie Watkins could be as good as Callum Wilson despite a poor start to the season at Aston Villa.

That’s according to former Villains boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the striker’s form.

Watkins, 26, has scored once in eight Premier League games this season with Villa sitting 14th in the table.

Aston Villa

The hitman had four shots on target against Aston Villa last weekend (2 October) but was unable to find a way past Illan Meslier (whoscored).

McLeish is certain Watkins will get back amongst the goals but claims he must find his shooting boots sooner rather than later.

“We can go back to amazing strikers like Alan Shearer, you have to brush it off and get on with it,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“You go through spells where you aren’t getting to goals but all good strikers end up scoring again. Watkins is a very decent player.

“He almost reminds me of Callum Wilson with his speed and energy levels, we all know how good he is and how important he is for Newcastle.

“I’m sure Watkins will get back amongst the goals but it needs to happen soon for Villa.”

Newcastle

As per The Athletic (3 October) Wilson, 30, turned down the chance to join Aston Villa before he signed for Newcastle.

It is also said he moved to the Magpies despite Villa offering a higher weekly wage.
