Expert baffled by Tottenham after 'strange' Djed Spence reveal

Djed Spence will not start for Tottenham in their opening Premier League game against Southampton on Saturday, according to Alan Hutton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender said the 21-year-old will have to “prove himself” to Antonio Conte to find a place in the starting XI.

Spence, 21, was an unused substitute in the Lilywhites’ final pre-season game against AS Roma.

Conte’s men lost 1-0 to the Italian top flight side.

As quoted by the Mirror (20 July), Conte revealed Spence’s signing was a decision taken by the club, rather than the manager himself.

Spurs signed the England youth international from Middlesbrough in a deal which could rise to £20million.

When asked if Spence could feature in Tottenham’s game at the weekend, Hutton told Football Insider: “I don’t think he’ll start at this moment in time.

It’s strange, I was reading about Antonio’s comments and he was saying it wasn’t him that signed him it was a club signing. It’s a bit of a strange dynamic for me.

Obviously he’s got options in the right wing-back with [Matt] Doherty and Emerson Royal. He’s got Lucas Moura who could play there, [Ivan] Perisic could arguably play there so he has got options.

Ultimately I think it’s down to Djed Spence. We saw last season how good he can be, even if it was only in the Championship. But Tottenham want that attacking threat in the wing-back area.

I don’t think he’ll start. He’s definitely one for the future but I think he’s going to have to prove to the manager over time how good he can be.
