Expert can't believe 'incredible' official Newcastle update - 'that's phenomenal'

Newcastle United’s support is “phenomenal” after an update on fans’ struggles to purchase a season ticket.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ support.

On Wednesday (22 June) Newcastle announced a small number of season tickets will go on sale next week following an “unprecedented” level of renewals from the 2021-22 season.

The same day, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder reported 30,000 people have tried to buy the small number of season tickets, which he understands to be 1000.

Newcastle’s attendance drastically increased following the club’s Sadui-led takeover in October.

McLeish insists this problem will not go away.

“That’s phenomenal,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“But it’s not exactly news to everyone we know, everyone knows about the support Newcastle have.

“How many years have we been talking about them being sleeping giants? If they do become those giants then they will need two stadiums to get all of the fans in.

“It’s an incredible city in terms of the fan base. It’s a one-club city. It’s like the entire population of the city supports Newcastle and they all want a ticket.”

Newcastle won six of their last eight games as they avoided relegation to the Championship during the 2021-22 season.

The club’s new owners sanctioned five signings in January after the previous ownership only signed Joe Willock in the previous summer window.
