Expert cites Alisson as Newcastle United agree new signing

Loris Karius will not be phased by making his Newcastle United debut amid questions over his confidence.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ latest signing.

Newcastle announced the signing of Karius on a short-term deal on Monday (12 September) after an injury to backup keeper Karl Darlow.

The stopper was released by Liverpool at the end of last season.

Karius is best remembered for his performance in the 2019 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid in which he gifted Karim Benzema the opener and failed to stop a long-range Gareth Bale effort.

However, Kenny expects Karius has recovered and will be mentally prepared if he is called into action.

“I would like to think he has got over it now, he is a professional footballer,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Don’t get me wrong, he made big mistakes at the highest level in the highest games. As a professional, especially a goalkeeper, you have to accept you will make mistakes.

“Even the top keepers make mistakes, Ederson, Alisson, they all do it. It’s how you deal with them as a person, can you blank them out and move on?

“Can you address that mistake and make sure it doesn’t happen again? I would like to think he has moved on and it’s not in his mind.

“He’s there for backup and that is all he will end up being, Pope has been outstanding this season. I’m sure he will continue that form and push Pickford for that starting England spot.”

Newcastle loaned Martin Dubravka to Man United at the end of the summer transfer window, robbing Eddie Howe of a capable backup keeper.

The Magpies are in action against Bournemouth on Saturday (17 September).

In other news, a finance guru has claimed Newcastle United have just banked ‘money for nothing’ as new deal agreed.
