Expert dismisses social media controversy as Tottenham backed to sign James Maddison
Tottenham should not hesitate to sign James Maddison despite a past controversy involving Gareth Bale.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
According to football.london (21 July), Antonio Conte wants to add a new playmaker to his Tottenham squad this summer after missing out on Christian Eriksen.

The Telegraph claim (20 July) that Leicester could be forced to sell the reported Spurs target if they want to do business of their own this summer
In August 2021, old tweets of Maddison’s from 2021 were dug up in which he stated “I hate Gareth Bale with a passion” as well as claiming Jack Wilshire is “10x” better than the then-Spurs man.
However, Wenham claims fans should move on from those old comments.
“I think Maddison is a fantastic player. He’s a creative midfielder, homegrown, a lock-picker,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I have said this before, next season we won’t have a strongest starting XI, it will be more like a regular squad of 18 with the five subs we now have.
“Maddison would offer us something we don’t have, a creative number 10. He’s also a set-piece specialist who already has Premier League experience.
“He can come straight in with no settling in period. If he moved to Tottenham then I think we would also see him in the England squad very quickly.

“It would be the right move if you want to catch Gareth Southgate’s eye. I would welcome James Maddison even though there are issues with some old tweets about Gareth Bale.
“He was 15 or 16 at the time, let’s move on.”
