Expert drops ‘huge’ Celtic player exit claim after deal agreed

Celtic have to accept that players will want to move on from the club after two or three years.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said that although they are a “huge” club, the Celts have to accept that they cannot retain good players for any length of time.

The Parkhead club confirmed (24 July) the arrival of K-League star Kyeokkyu Kwon on a five-year deal.

The 22-year-old links up with Hyeongyu Oh as well as fellow new signing Hyunjun Yang.

Speaking ahead of his move to Glasgow, Kwon told Korean outlet Naver Sports (18 July) that not only does he have ambitions to become the club’s best player but also secure a move to a top European side.

The midfielder cited the Premier League and Bundesliga as two potential destinations.

When asked what he made of players using Celtic as a stepping stone to other clubs, McAvennie told Football Insider:I think we have got to accept that.

Celtic

I think you will find that Celtic is a huge club, one of the biggest in the world but in the league that we are in there is not a lot we can do about that.

We are where we are and we just have to get on with it. If we get players for two or three years if offers come in, we cannot say no to that. We are in the market where we cannot hold on to players, we are a selling club.
