Expert fears Tottenham could be about to sign ‘next Gedson Fernandes’ after update

Tottenham could be about to sign the next Gedson Fernandes as the club reportedly ramp up their attempts to recruit a midfielder this month.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On Tuesday (25 January) the Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick reported Spurs’ interest in completing a loan move for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Speaking on Twitter, Wenham described the player as a “Fiorentina reserve” and compared his potential signing to that of Gedson Fernandes.

Speaking to Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, Wenham admitted he is “really worried” about Tottenham sanctioning this kind of signing.

“I always worry about these deals like Amrabat that happen late in the window, especially the ones where the player’s name has come out of nowhere.

“Two years ago we signed Gedson Fernandes. It took two minutes of looking to see he was well below the required standard to play for us.

“With that transfer and ones like it, we should just give that place in the squad and that chance to one of our youth players.

“That was a bad deal and a waste of money. The thing is, I don’t think we have learned from our mistakes on that deal.

“Signings like that are mainly for agents, I genuinely believe that. People think that doesn’t go on, I’m telling you it does.

“The agent can then say their player played at Tottenham and that’s them sorted for the next 10 years.

“I am really worried about those signings because they never prove successful. We don’t need the next Gedson.”

Fernandes, 23, made 14 appearances for Spurs during his 18-month loan spell.

He failed to contribute a goal or assist.
