Expert: Giovani Lo Celso may now stay at Tottenham after 'insane' development

It is “insane” that Villarreal will not meet the asking price for Tottenham outcast Giovani Lo Celso.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

As per The Times’ Gary Jacob (20 July), Spurs rejected a fresh loan offer for Lo Celso from Fiorentina, but the club have now revised their bid to include a view to a permanent £15m deal.

The 26-year-old midfielder left Spurs in January and spent a productive second half of the season on loan at Villarreal.

Lo Celso was also left out of Spurs’ pre-season trip to South Korea – sending a clear message about his status at the club.

Wenham has been left frustrated with the club’s failure to offload the player.

“I find it insane, where has Villarreal’s money gone?” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I have checked their income, they haven’t signed anyone. Are Barcelona siphoning off their money or something?

“£15million isn’t enough for someone who starts every game for Argentina. It’s not really enough. I don’t think the tactic we used with Ajax in the Bergwijn deal will work here.

“Maybe we will just have to get rid of him. If we are only being offered this lower figure then it might be worth keeping him until the end of the window and see what kind of offers come in on deadline day.”

Lo Celso made 19 appearances for Tottenham in the first half of the 2021-22 season.

He has made 84 total appearances for the club.
