Expert issues ‘brutal’ verdict on Calvin Bassey signing for Aston Villa after update

Calvin Bassey will get “ripped apart” by Premier League attackers if he moves to Aston Villa this summer.

That’s according to former Villa hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Premier League interest in the defender.

According to Sky Sports (26 May), Aston Villa are among a number of Premier League clubs to have made enquiries about Bassey, 22, ahead of the summer window.

The report claims Rangers want in excess of £25million in order to part with the defender.

Bassey has impressed since joining the Gers on a free transfer from Leicester in June 2020.

However, McAvennie insists he is not yet good enough to play in the Premier League and fears top players like Jack Grealish are no match for him.

“Can he go in and play in the Premier League right now? No,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I don’t think he is good enough for the Premier League. If Gerrard is buying him, it’s because he has done a job in Scotland.

“England is a whole different game. He’s muscle-bound but if he comes up against someone like Jack Grealish he will get ripped apart.

“I’m sorry to say Bassey but that’s the truth. Another year up with Rangers and maybe he might be ready.

“At this moment in time, the brutal truth is he’s good enough.”

Rangers

Bassey made 50 appearances in all competitions for Rangers during the 2021-22 season.

He provided six assists as he operated as a left-back and centre-back.
