Expert issues ‘outrageous’ Nick Pope verdict after what he’s seen at Newcastle United

Newcastle United have pulled off the signing of the summer by bringing Nick Pope to the club.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 30-year-old’s start to life on Tyneside.

Pope has started both of Newcastle’s Premier League games this season, keeping two clean sheets.

As per Football Insider pundit and football finance expert Kieran Maguire (22 July), the Magpies have only paid around £2.3million of the £10million total fee for the stopper so far.

Kenny can’t believe Newcastle managed to sign the England international for such a small amount.

“When I saw it was £10million I said that was the signing of the summer and I have not changed my mind,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He has been excellent in those two games. I used to watch him at Burnley and think he was far too good for them.

“Some of the saves he made were outrageous. He will prove to be the signing of the summer, absolute bargain as well.

“Where do you get an England goalkeeper for £10million these days? It’s incredible business. Now he is at Newcastle, he could be starting at the World Cup.

“Pickford keeps struggling at Everton and I have a feeling Pope will be starting at the World Cup.”

Pope was called into action several times against Brighton last weekend (13 August) as Newcastle secured a valuable point on the south coast.

Newcastle are next in action against Man City on Sunday (21 August).
