Expert issues 'terrible' Loris Karius claim after confirmed Newcastle United news

Loris Karius is not a “terrible signing” for Newcastle United despite his form at the end of his Liverpool career, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and Scotland manager insisted Karius must be in good form to get a contract offer from Newcastle.

The club confirmed earlier this week (12 September) that the 29-year-old had signed a short-term contract.

Karl Darlow has picked up an injury in training and Eddie Howe wanted to bring in experienced cover for Nick Pope.

Karius has been a free agent since leaving Liverpool at the end of the season but he had not featured for the Reds since his disastrous performance in the 2018 Champions League final.

“Listen, come on, players go through bad spells, including goalkeepers,” McLeish told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“Karius had a spell where he couldn’t do anything right and that kind of resonates through the whole of world football.

“I remember being in dark places myself as a player in my twenties when I lost my form and lost my confidence. You think you are never going to get your A-game back again.

“Like every professional in every walk of life who wants to get to the top, you have to be able to brush off the bad things and focus on the positives.

“For him to even get recognsied by Newcastle tells me that he’s been in a good place recently and his goalkeeping skills are being shown to the full again.

“You can’t say that Newcastle have made a terrible signing there because he made a lot of mistakes for Liverpool.

“They’ve obviously done their homework, they’ve obviously seen his recent form and have got a goalkeeper with good experience.”

In other news, a finance guru has claimed Newcastle United have just banked “money for nothing” as a new deal is agreed.
