Expert lambasts officials after what he spotted from ‘metres away’ in Tottenham clash – ‘wild’

John Wenham insists the Video Assistant Referee was wrong to rule out Harry Kane’s late strike for Tottenham against Sporting Lisbon

Spurs expert Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels, attended the game and had an up-close view of the incident.

Tottenham thought they had stolen a 2-1 win in the dying moments of their Champions League clash against Sporting on Wednesday (26 October).

However, after a lengthy VAR check, Kane was ruled to be offside before he stuck the ball in the net.

Wenham, who was sat in the first row behind the goal, insists the decision was “harsh”.

“It’s very frustrating but it’s one of those, we benefitted from it when we beat Man City in the Champions League a few years ago,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Raheem Sterling’s goal got ruled out. All I can say is, I was row one, directly behind that goal, metres away. I was blowing it into the net myself when it came across to Harry.

“Yes, it is frustrating, we all celebrated wildly. It seems like we have been on the end of a harsh, millimetre decision.

“But those are the rules. That’s why it was brought in. If you don’t like VAR on the whole then that is a different matter.

“It is what it is, unfortunately. That doesn’t take away from the fact that we were dreadful against Sporting and we shouldn’t have been looking for a last-minute winner.

“We should have won comfortably but we didn’t deserve to win the game in my opinion.”

Marcus Edwards scored for Sporting before Rodrigo Bentancur equalised in the second half.
