Expert lauds Tottenham after 'brilliant' Marcus Edwards transfer reveal

Tottenham were “very clever” to keep their 50% Marcus Edwards sell-on clause after the player joined Sporting Lisbon in the summer.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Edwards, 23, dazzled as Sporting Lisbon beat Tottenham 2-0 on Tuesday (13 September).

As per The Telegraph’s Matt Law (14 September), Tottenham could bank £26million if any club activates his £52million Sporting Lisbon release clause.

Spurs included a 50% sell-on clause in the deal that saw Edwards join Vitoria in the summer of 2019 and that clause was transferred into his Sporting deal this summer.

Wenham has lauded the club’s dealmakers for their work on the transfer.

“I see the stuff about his clause has come up again, I tweeted about this when he left,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Tottenham very cleverly inserted this sell-on clause and even better, used their lawyers to secure the paperwork to carry that fee over.

“Sporting paid less for the player and Vitoria would get more money with Tottenham’s clause still in the deal.

“It worked for all parties. It has put him in the shop window and he is their main man now as well. When I was at the stadium I saw a number of Sporting fans with Edwards on the back of their shirts.

“He got the loudest cheer when his name was read out and he had that brilliant run. I have seen him do that at the youth level for Tottenham.

“It was a wonderful moment.

Now that this clause is known about, we could see someone move for him this summer.”
