Expert names three defenders Tottenham are trying to sign as Newcastle deal agreed

Sven Botman was never high up on the Tottenham recruitment list as they look to sign a new defender.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On Tuesday (28 June) Newcastle announced they had agreed a deal “in principle” for the transfer of Botman from Lille.

The left-footed centre-back is set to become Eddie Howe’s third signing of the summer and his fifth defensive signing since taking the Magpies’ job in November.

Spurs are trying to sign a left-footed centre-back this summer and Wenham admits the arrival of Botman would have made sense for Spurs.

“On paper, he ticks a few boxes for Tottenham,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He has a good height to him, a left-footed centre-half, international experience under his belt.

“I’m sure Tottenham looked at him, there were links a few months ago though nothing concrete.

“It seems like Newcastle have been in discussions with the player for a very long time, dating back to the January transfer window.

“Perhaps it got to the point where Newcastle were so far along in talks that another team coming in would not have made a difference.

“AC Milan were also heavily linked. I think Tottenham have made their targets very clear – Bastoni, Gvardiol and Pau Torres.”

Botman made 32 appearances for Lille during the 2021-22 season.

He also helped the French side win the Ligue 1 title in the previous season, his first with the club.
