Expert: Rangers have signed up their own Luka Modric after confirmed news

Steven Davis can be Rangers’ own Luka Modric after signing a new deal with the club.

That’s according to former Celtic hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s new contract.

On Tuesday (31 May), Rangers confirmed Davis, 37, has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

The midfielder’s previous deal was set to expire this summer after only signing a one-year extension in the summer of 2021.

He remains an important player for the Gers, making 33 appearances in all competitions during the 2021-22 season.

McAvennie has now compared Davis to Real Madrid star Modric.

“I think Davis balances that team when he plays,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You have John Lundstram in the middle and he is just a lump, he’s a big man. Davis just has that smoothness about him.

“He controls the game, slows it down, speeds it up. The other Rangers midfielders can’t do that.

“I know I’m calling Lundstram a lump but he is in there to win things and he does it well, the fans love him.

“Lundstram tried to bully people, sometimes it works. Rangers need someone who can control things while just letting Lundstram go about his business.

“Davis is that man. Until Davis shows that his legs have gone, I would keep him there.

“You see Modric the other night, he’s getting on but he’s brilliant, Davis is similar to that.”

Rangers

Davis has made 344 appearances for the Gers over two spells.

He has scored 25 goals and provided 70 assists.

In other news, one pundit has tipped Rangers to sign the next Joe Hart after an update.
