Expert slams ‘disrespectful’ quotes after new Antonio Conte outburst at Tottenham

Noel Whelan has insisted Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is “absolutely right” to be angry about Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann’s comments on Harry Kane.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 35-year-old German has violated the “etiquette” of conducting transfer business.

As per Sky Sports (23 July), Nagelsmann has opened the door on a future move for Kane during a press conference – claiming he would “score a lot” in the Bundesliga, before adding “we will see what happens in the future.”

Conte then hit back at his counterpart, also via Sky Sports (24 July), claiming his comments were “disrespectful.”

Kane, who Bayern are reportedly targeting as a potential Robert Lewandowski successor, is under contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until June 2024.

Whelan insisted Nagelsmann’s comments were “out of order” and may have “disrupted” the England captain – who saw a move to Man City fall through last summer.

“Conte’s absolutely right,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Nagelsmann will have heard it hundreds of times from other managers – ‘we don’t discuss players who don’t belong to us’. Now this is out of order.

“There’s an etiquette about signing players and how you go about it – no matter who the player is or how big a club you are.

“That’s not the right way to go about it. It is disrespectful.

“I’m sure lots of managers want to sign players around the world.

But they will not disrupt or cause problems for them by mentioning it in the media.”
