Expert tells Liverpool to make Darwin Nunez change after new development – ‘just like Haaland’

Noel Whelan has urged Liverpool to hand Darwin Nunez an extended run of starts in order to unlock his true scoring potential.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted giving the 23-year-old more game time will allow Jurgen Klopp and his teammates to “find out more about his game and find his strengths”.

Nunez scored his first Anfield goal on Wednesday (19 October) as Liverpool recorded a slender 1-0 win over West Ham.

The £85million signing was making his sixth start for the Merseysiders, having been brought off the substitutes’ bench on five other occasions.

Nunez has scored four goals so far this term but has been largely outshone by Man City’s mega-money signing Erling Haaland – who has already notched 20 strikes.

Whelan told Klopp to put his full trust in the Uruguay international and insisted “he will score goals” for the Merseysiders.

When asked if it was time for Nunez to get a prolonged run in the Liverpool side, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely.

“New players need time to get to grips with the Premier League and their new teammates.

“Liverpool have got to find his strengths, just as Man City did very quickly with Erling Haaland.

“If you find out more about his game and play to his strengths, he will score goals. He might not be as prolific as Haaland, but he certainly can have an impact in games.

“He’s great in the air, he’s got all the attributes you want from a number nine.

“He just needs to have the trust of the manager and that time in the eleven, even if he’s not scoring goals.

“He’s got to be out on the field in order for Liverpool to get the best out of him.”
