Expert thrilled by new Darwin Nunez development at Liverpool
Noel Whelan has insisted Darwin Nunez has already shown he can manage the weight of expectation at Liverpool after his debut goal in the Community Shield.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 23-year-old could be the “difference” in a potential title race with Man City this season.
Nunez came off the bench on the hour mark to win a penalty and score a third goal late on to wrap up a 3-1 Community Shield victory for Liverpool at the King Power Stadium on Saturday (30 July).
The club-record reported £85million arrival had come under fire following some of his pre-season performances – but scored four goals in a warm-up game against RB Leipzig late in July.
Nunez notched 34 goals and four assists for Benfica last term to persuade Jurgen Klopp to bring him to Anfield.
Presumptive title rivals and current champions Man City have also moved to bring in a traditional number nine in Erling Haaland.

Whelan suggested it will be a “really exciting” season as both sides adapt to their new-look attacking options.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Criticism is criticism, but he’s done his talking on the field.
“He’s going to get a hat-load of chances for this Liverpool side – but he’s already shown, for me, that he can carry that expectation on his shoulders.
“He is someone that I’m really looking forward to watching this season because I’ve already seen glimpses of what he can do.
“It’s really exciting because Liverpool haven’t had a player like him for so many years now.
“To have two of the best number nines in the world battling it out, it’s going to be a really exciting season.
“Nunez could be the difference in bringing the title back to Liverpool.”
