Expert tips Michail Antonio for new role at West Ham after update – ‘they’ve been crying out for it’
Noel Whelan has backed Michail Antonio to be pushed into a wide role at West Ham after the marquee arrival of Gianluca Scamacca.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Irons have been “crying out” for more options in attack.
West Ham confirmed the signing of Scamacca, 23, last week (26 July), with the Italy international signing a five-year deal – with the option of a further year.
Antonio started the 2021-22 campaign strongly with six goals in the first six league games but struggled with fitness and injury issues as the season wore on.
The Jamaica international, who began his transition into a striker during the 2016-17 season, has just two years left to run on his contract at the London Stadium.
Antonio has scored a total of 60 goals in 225 games for West Ham since joining in 2015.
When asked if Scamacca is now first choice, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think right now, yes.
“But Antonio could play out wide. There’s a real battle for places, which is exciting for West Ham – they’ve been crying out for that for so long.
“I don’t think they can afford to leave Antonio out of the side with what he gives you. He could play on the left-hand side, with Bowen on the right, and Scamacca through the middle.

“Moyes has got to be really careful and find that balance. But they’ve got options, which will be really exciting.
“The fans will be clamouring to see Scamacca start, but the hard work and honesty of Antonio makes him a great option.”
