FA announcement on West Brom controversy stuns ex-PGMOL chief as new video footage mooted
West Brom’s weekend went from bad to worse on Saturday when Alfie Gilchrist was sent off during the Baggies’ 1-0 defeat to Hull City.
Going into the game, Ryan Mason’s future was already uncertain at The Hawthorns, and the recent defeat would have done little to silence his critics.
In fact, Mason is one of the favourites to be sacked next in the Championship, after the Baggies fell to 16th in the table.
Therefore, with Bristol City up next on Boxing Day, the manager would have hope to have a full squad available to him.
However, Gilchrist remains out of the game after he was sent off against the Tigers.
Keith Hackett surprised Alfie Gilchrist red card appeal was not overturned
Gilchrist has not had a great time since being released by Chelsea and joining the Baggies.
The full-back has often featured on the bench, meaning he has had few chances to shine under Mason.
Therefore, Gilchrist would have been gutted when he came off the bench against Hull City, only to be sent off after eight minutes.
- Gilchrist was released by Chelsea in the summer
- As a result, he joined West Brom on a free transfer
- However, his appearances have since been limited since the move
It was an odd red card, with the defender taking out Liam Millar by the halfway line in what appeared to be a challenge warranting nothing more than a yellow card.
However, the referee was quick to send Gilchrist off, with West Brom proceeding to fail in their efforts to get the suspension overturned.
Now, the Baggies star is set to be suspended for three matches.

When Keith Hackett was asked if he was surprised by this decision, he exclusively told Football Insider: “Yes – the disciplinary panel must have had a better piece of video to upheld their decision.
“On the above clip there is inconclusive evidence and that is what the appeal was made.
“I do think that fairness is so important and if they used the above video clip then the decision by the panel is frankly more than surprising.”
Which games is Gilchrist now set to miss?
Gilchrist will now miss West Brom’s next three matches as the Baggies look to traverse their remaining festive fixtures.
First up, the Baggies face Bristol City at The Hawthorns on Boxing Day before hosting QPR on 29 December.
From here, West Brom travel to Swansea on 1 January, in one of two fixtures against the Welsh side this month, with the Black Country club also set to face them in the FA Cup.
Therefore, Gilchrist is set to be available again in the Baggies’ away day to Leicester City on 5 January.
