Fabian Hurzeler: Brighton ‘doing everything’ to block Bayer Leverkusen move

Fabian Hurzeler is attracting interest from Bayer Leverkusen in their potential managerial vacancy, but Brighton have no intention of losing their boss.

Current Leverkusen boss Kasper Hjulmand is under pressure with the club currently placed sixth in the Bundesliga and at risk of missing out on Champions League qualification.

As a result, they have begun assessing potential replacements, with the Seagulls’ boss believed to be high on their list of targets after his spell at St Pauli.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Brighton are “doing everything” to prevent Hurzeler walking away from his position.

This could see them spend heavily in the summer in an attempt to build on what has been a turbulent season, as Brighton have no plans to replace their manager.

How can Brighton keep hold of Fabian Hurzeler?

Football Insider revealed on 30 March that Hurzeler is a top target for Bayer Leverkusen, but Brighton have no plans to let him leave any time soon.

The Seagulls have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in their recent form which has seen them surge up the Premier League table into contention for a European place.

They remain keen to back Hurzeler as part of their ambitious plans for the future, as they aim to build on what has been a steady two seasons with him at the helm.

“Brighton don’t want to lose their manager any time soon,” Brown told Football Insider.

“There may well be interest from Leverkusen and other German clubs because that’s always the case, they’ll be looking to lure him back to his home country.

“But as far as Brighton are concerned, he’s doing a very good job there, even though there was that blip and suggestions he could be let go.

“It would be a blow for them to have to go and look for a new manager, so they will be doing everything in their power to keep him at the club.

“Whether that means backing him more in the transfer window, helping him to keep their upward trajectory, whatever he wants they’ll be doing it.

“Lots of clubs are going to be looking for new managers in the summer and they don’t want to have to compete and scramble around for somebody new.”

Did Brighton really consider sacking Hurzeler?

Brighton endured a difficult run of form over the busy winter schedule which saw them drop to 14th in the Premier League table, piling pressure on the boss.

Brown told Football Insider in February that Brighton were having doubts about Hurzeler, with large sections of the fanbase venting their frustrations.

Everton boss David Moyes even addressed the speculation following their 1-1 draw as he urged Brighton fans to be careful what they wish for with regard to the boss.

Since then, things have turned around for Hurzeler with four wins in their last five games which have fired them up to tenth place.

Brighton are believed to have never considered his dismissal despite initial doubts emerging, and are now hopeful he will remain at the Amex long-term.
