Fabian Schar breaks silence after development on Newcastle future

Fabian Schar sent a message of support to his Newcastle teammates amid a fresh update on his contract situation with the club.

The centre-back is due to be out of contract at St James’ Park at the end of this season, meaning is now allowed to talk to foreign clubs about joining them on a free transfer in the summer.

On Tuesday (7 January) however, it was reported that the Magpies are in advanced well talks with the former Switzerland international about extending his deal with the club (Fabrizio Romano).

Now Schar has taken to Instagram for the first time since that claim around his Newcastle future emerged, to show his backing for his teammates.

With the centre-back suspended for the first leg of his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final with Arsenal, he instead posted a picture of the game on his TV, along with the caption “Come on boys”.

Newcastle would go on to record a 2-0 victory at the Emirates through Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Fabian Schar extension would be a big boost for Newcastle

Football Insider Opinion

There is no doubt it would provide a major lift for Eddie Howe’s side if they can agree a new contract for the Schar.

The centre-back has been a strong performer for Newcastle for some time now, and his importance to the side means a new deal would help their prospects in terms of results.

It would also be frustrating for them to lose such an important player for nothing, which they are at risk of doing if they do not agree a new contract.

Newcastle

They would surely have to replace Schar if he does leave, and not receiving a fee for him would make it harder to do that.

Newcastle also have other centre-backs facing an uncertain future as well, so they can ill afford to leave themselves short in that position, further adding to the importance of keeping the 33-year-old.

With that in mind, this latest update on the club’s contract talks with Schar will no doubt be welcome one for supporters.

In other news, Newcastle are plotting another move to sign a Serie A centre-back.
