Alex McLeish has lauded the “stability” at Aston Villa after Tyrone Mings and Jack Grealish committed their futures to the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa manager insists the centre-back has been a “fabulous buy” and has contributed enormously to the strong spine of the side.

The Villans confirmed on Monday that the 27-year-old had signed a new long-term contract extension set to keep him tied down until 2024.

The defender has followed in Grealish’s footsteps after the attacking talisman put pen to paper on a five-year deal earlier this month.

McLeish believes the duo are two players the club need to continue to build around and insists their new deals at Villa Park offer some much-needed stability.

McLeish told Football Insider: “Defenders are always seen as they’ve got to be the most consistent.

“You’ll get the creative players and sometimes they can’t do it every week and you need a defender to come up with a bit of inspiration at a corner.

“Mings has been a fabulous buy for Aston Villa, good signs getting Grealish too and there’s stability, they’re getting stability, they’re getting the core, the nucleus, of the team – the goalkeeper, centre-back, midfielder and striker, that spine.”

Villa kicked off their Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United, with Mings’ flick-on headed home by Ezri Konsa for the winner.

The Villans are also into the fourth round of the League Cup after wins over Burton Albion and Bristol City.
