Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their frustration that defender Bruno Alves is reportedly out of the Old Firm clash against Celtic tomorrow (Saturday).

The EstConsultancy Twitter account, which is a reliable source of news for Rangers, reported this morning that Alves is sidelined for the showdown at Ibrox.

The centre-back is set to be replaced in the starting XI by teenager Ross McCrorie, who made his debut in the midweek Scottish League Cup win at Partick Thistle.

The loss of Alves, 35, would be a huge blow for Rangers, given his experience and proven ability in marquee fixtures.

It is the second major blow for the Light Blues ahead of the match, with skipper Lee Wallace also ruled out for two months with a groin injury.

McCrorie stepped in at Firhill after Alves limped out of the match and the youngster equipped himself well, to earn the subsequent post-match praise of Pedro Caixinha.

But Rangers fans are dismayed at the prospect of the team’s best defender missing the biggest match of their season to date.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Alves has made a huge impact since joining Rangers this summer as part of a massive overhaul of the squad that endured a wretched return to the top flight last season.

The 93-times Portugal international has started all six of the club’s Scottish Premiership fixtures and formed an increasingly reliable alliance with countryman Fabio Cardoso.

The senior man is regarded as the leader of the defensive unit, which has conceded eight league goals.

In other Rangers team news, a bizarre admission from Ibrox has played right into Celtic’s hands ahead of the Old Firm.
