Ferguson: This is where Celtic and Rangers would finish in the Premier League

By Richard Parks

Barry Ferguson has insisted that Celtic would be able to hold their own and avoid relegation if they were in the English Premier League.

Ferguson is confident that the Hoops, who have won the last six Scottish titles and are unbeaten in 56 domestic matches, would “eventually be a force” in England once the impact of the greater revenues kicked in after a few years.

But the Ibrox legend is less convinced that Pedro Caixinha’s side could currently compete in the Premier League.

Ferguson explained that it is still “early doors” for a number of their new signings and it is too early to have reached a definitive assessment on their credentials.

“With their current squad, Celtic would certainly hold their own in the Premier League,” Ferguson told the Scottish Sun.

“For me, they wouldn’t be in the relegation and they would control a place easily in the Premier League.

“On the other hand, Rangers I’m not too sure. With their new squad, I haven’t seen enough of them and it’s still early doors for a lot of these players so it’s hard to say.

“I think the two clubs would eventually be a force three or four years after they did get down to the Premier League, as the finances would then start to come into the clubs.

“You just need to look at the two stadiums and the fan base.

“If the two teams went a spent a bit of time down in England, I’m sure they would become a force in time.”

Ferguson delivered his verdicts on the Glasgow giants as they prepare for the first Old Firm of the season, which takes place at Ibrox tomorrow (Saturday).

Pedro Caixinha’s side have showed encouraging signs in recent weeks after undergoing a complete overhaul during the summer window.

Rangers will narrow the gap on leaders Celtic to two points if they secure a victory this weekend.

In other Rangers news, a bizarre admission from Ibrox has played right into Celtic’s hands ahead of the Old Firm.
