Finance expert issues Sunderland claim as £300m ‘negotiations’ revealed
Sunderland will cope better than most clubs if the EFL are unable to complete a deal with the Premier League over financial re-distribution.
That is the view of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about how the ongoing negotiations between the two organisations will affect EFL clubs.
The Independent reported on Saturday (7 January) that the EFL are “not hopeful” of reaching a financial settlement with the Premier League over re-distribution in the English football pyramid.

The EFL have requested £300million from the top flight, but the Premier League have been reluctant to agree to that figure.
The chairs and chief executives of the EFL, Premier League and Football Association held face-to-face talks for the first time in history last Friday, but an agreement is yet to be found.
Plumley believes that failure to find an agreement would be a huge financial blow for almost every EFL club.
“We’ve seen the Premier League be reluctant when it comes to looking at the distribution model and benefiting the EFL and the wider collective of clubs,” Plumley told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“The negotiations are still very much at a standoff and that will hurt almost every EFL club.

“Sunderland are a well-insulated side and can handle it better than most – they won’t be the worst off if an agreement isn’t found.
“That’s a small crumb of comfort for them given where they’re at, but overall it’s a blow for all EFL clubs as they’re trying to leverage as much as they can and the Premier League isn’t going to budge.“
