Finance expert reveals key factor for Marc Guehi January transfer to Liverpool
Marc Guehi may make a move to Liverpool in January after his deadline day transfer from Crystal Palace fell through.
That is the verdict of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the £35million [BBC Sport] fee that was agreed for the defender represented “really good value”.
Guehi agreed to join Liverpool on deadline day, solving the issue of the Reds’ lack of depth defensively.
The Premier League champions looked to have secured one of the bargains of the window thanks to the England international’s contract having just one year remaining.
However, Crystal Palace cancelled Guehi’s move to Liverpool in the final hours of the transfer window as they failed to secure a replacement.
As a result, the 25-year-old can now negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs in January or alternatively, Arne Slot‘s side could look to sign the defender for a cut-price fee before he leaves the Eagles in the summer.

Marc Guehi Liverpool transfer dependent on ‘goodwill’
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley explained that a January move for Guehi would likely come down to the “goodwill” between the two clubs.
The Telegraph reports that Liverpool will not make a cash bid for the defender in the coming transfer window, although there were similar reports that claimed the Reds would not continue their pursuit of Alexander Isak after having a bid rejected for £110m at the beginning of August [BBC Sport].
Plumley explained: “This is an interesting one, isn’t it? Because it’s counter to some of the examples we’ve seen with [Alexander] Isak and [Yoane] Wissa.

“Guehi didn’t force a move, he didn’t kind of come out publicly, and he conducted himself really well during the window, and actually, £35m in the context of the fees we’ve seen is really good value for a player like him.
“This one is going to depend on where the goodwill is left in that transfer kind of scenario.”
Federico Chiesa facing January exit from Liverpool
Whilst much of the upcoming winter window will focus on Guehi, there is likely to be at least one departure in the near future.
Federico Chiesa’s place in the Liverpool squad is at risk thanks to Isak’s arrival, Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider exclusively.

The Italian forward seemed to have turned a corner when he scored a late winner against Bournemouth on the first day of the season.
But Chiesa has been left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad and with Cody Gakpo, Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, and Rio Ngumoha all ahead of him in the pecking order at striker and left-wing, it seems likely that the 27-year-old’s future lies away from Anfield.
