Finance guru addresses ‘big problem’ for Man United after Harry Maguire reveal

Doctor Dan Plumley has claimed “wage control is a big problem” in English football following a Fifpro study involving Man United defender Harry Maguire.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance expert claimed a reduction in player salaries is needed “irrespective” of how many games are played in a season.

A Fifpro survey (26 May) revealed that from a sample of 1055-players 55 per cent had suffered a fatigue-related injury.

The study used the example of Man United and England star Harry Maguire, who played 19 matches back-to-back with less than five days rest between each one.

Fifpro found that their 1055 players and 92 performance expert are overwhelmingly in favour of new regulations to address increasing match congestion at the top of the game.

When asked by Football Insider if increasing player wages were driving the need for more games, Plumley said: “It is a really interesting question.

“Less games would lead to less in bonus payments. We know players are on appearance bonuses, goal bonuses, assist bonuses, clean sheet bonuses and so on.

“I suppose players additional payments would be impacted or reduced if there was less games. That seems a fairly reasonable suggestion.

“Looking at it more widely a wage cap is needed irrespective of the number of games played. Wage control is still a big problem across English football. That is a different angle.”
