Finance guru issues ‘strange’ Liverpool claim as £10.5bn partners frustrated

Doctor Dan Plumley has claimed the reluctance from big-six clubs like Liverpool to hand over more training footage to broadcasters is “strange”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance expert suggested the “big clubs” want to sell their behind-the-scenes footage independently because they “see it as an opportunity to get more money.”

According to the Daily Mail (2 June), Premier League Productions have requested teams send them a five-minute compilation of clips from training sessions which will be aired via the likes of Sky and BT Sport.

However, there is understood to be resistance to the request from some clubs and the matter could be voted on at the next league meeting.

Broadcasters, who The Times claim will pay £10.5billion over the next three seasons, are growing frustrated with club’s keeping content for themselves given how much they spend on rights deals.

Premier League clubs currently send 15 minutes per month of footage from training to broadcasters.

When asked by Football Insider why there could be resistance from clubs, Plumley said: “It does seem strange.

“My gut feeling would be that the big clubs want to take this in house. They see it as an opportunity to do it themselves. They could partner with whoever they want to broadcast this behind-the-scenes footage.

“It does seem strange that an extra five minutes would be met with such resistance. You can sell every minute though I guess.

“The bigger clubs likely want to make the money themselves. My sense of it is that they would likely want to reduce the amount they give to the Premier League broadcasters rather than increase the amount of time.

“That is the way the conversations tend to have gone around broadcasting and behind-the-scenes opportunity. The bigger clubs will want to do more in the future because they see it as an opportunity to get more money through central deals.”
