Finance guru: Premier League ‘not going to budge’ in £300m talks amid plans to ‘protect’ Liverpool

The Premier League won’t agree to the £300million redistribution demands of the EFL as they feel obliged to protect “bigger clubs” in the division such as Liverpool.

That is the view of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the ongoing negotiations around financial redistribution in the English football pyramid.

The Premier League, Football Association and English Football League chief executives all met face-to-face for the first time last Friday (6 January), with the BBC reporting talks were “positive” between the three boards.

However, it was later reported that the EFL are “not hopeful” of the Premier League agreeing to their £300million request to redistribute money throughout lower leagues, with reports suggesting the top flight only want to pledge £160million.

Based on prize money alone, clubs in the Premier League gain £2.2million per position, with Liverpool earning a handy £41.8million for their second-place finish in the 2021/22 season.

Plumley believes the Premier League are “not going to budge” in future talks unless an independent regulator or the government steps in.

“I don’t expect too much movement from the Premier League in the next round of talks and the EFL almost seems resigned to that,” Plumley told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“That’s not to say that the EFL are doing the wrong thing, but I don’t expect the Premier League to bend to their demands.

“It’s always been a sticking point between the two organisations and I think it comes back full circle to needing someone else to intervene, whether that be the government or through an independent regulator.

“If that doesn’t happen they aren’t going to budge, because the Premier League feels the need to protect their big clubs – Liverpool being one of them.”
