Finance guru salutes Liverpool after £43m decision - 'it had to be done'

Doctor Dan Plumley has applauded Liverpool and other Premier League clubs for suspending their Russian TV deal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance expert insisted “it had to be done” and pointed to the fact it is “not a huge loss on a per club basis.”

As reported by the BBC (9 June), the Premier League have suspended their £43million six-year TV deal with Russian broadcaster Match TV.

The decision is in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Premier League are said to have felt that they had no choice but to suspend the agreement.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the news, Plumley said: “It had to be done.

“That will be the argument for the clubs, it is the right thing to do.

“We don’t know exactly how it would be divided up but it is a couple of million per clubs on a share basis. It is a lot of money but when the bottom clubs earns £100million from TV money every year it is a small percentage of that.

“I’m not sure anything is unanimously agreed in the Premier League but the majority rules are set.

The right thing to do is to suspend the deal. Common sense has prevailed on this one. In all honesty, it is not a huge loss on a per club basis.”
