Finance guru verdict on ‘threat’ to Liverpool as three-season deal announced

Doctor Dan Plumley has claimed Liverpool and other Premier League clubs will not be threatened by La Liga signing a broadcast deal with ITV.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance expert said will not change the broadcasting landscape even though it opens Barcelona and Real Madrid up to a broader market.

On 12 August, ITV announced a new three-season deal with La Liga beginning in the 2022-23 campaign.

The UK broadcaster has secured the rights to show 10 games per season with at least one of Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid to appear in each game.

The first La Liga match on show will be Real Sociedad against Barcelona on Sunday 21 August.

When asked by Football Insider if the increased exposure for Spain’s biggest clubs would be a concern for the likes of Liverpool, Plumley said: “It is a bonus for football fans to be able to watch live games that are free to air.

“I don’t see it as a direct threat to the likes of Liverpool.

“The Premier League broadcast deal is the biggest in the world. Fans will still have their subscriptions to the likes of Sky and BT Sport. This is just a nice extra for UK fans.

“The fact that it is free to air potentially opens them up to the broader market, the neutrals. But the challenge with that demographic is they often don’t want to watch full games. They want the on-demand, highlights packages.”
