Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce

Aston Villa are into the play-offs where they will face Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough in their first hurdle to return to the Premier League.

Steve Bruce led Villa to a fourth-placed finish this term, a massive improvement on the turgid 13th-placed that was achieved last season in their first year in the Championship.

Bruce wheeled and dealed in the summer to get the Villa squad up to scratch for a Championship promotion challenge and did so on a shoestring budget.

Signing Sam Johnstone, John Terry, Robert Snodgrass and Glenn Whelan in the summer helped them get off to solid start before bolstering the ranks in January with striker Lewis Grabban.

All of which were done without spending over £2million, so to get such an improvement from the team is remarkable.

Of course, Aston Villa would not have got themselves into the play-off spots without some brilliant performances throughout the course of the campaign.

In their 46 regular season games, the Villains have won 24 and here, Football Insider names the five greatest victories from the bunch.
