1992-2001, 2006-07 (323 appearances, 148 goals): The Artful Dodger was a true idol of the Kop, who marvelled at his Scally antics while racking up a fortune in property deals and goals-of-the-week contenders as if was all a kickabout in the park. For Fowler, that’s how it appeared. It all appeared so natural, so normal, because it was. Had he been unleashed in the modern era of uber-professionalism and conditioning, Fowler would not have peaked at 21 and suffered the endless stream of injuries in his 20s. He was God’s gift, but could have made top spot on our list had he looked after himself better.
