‘Florian Wirtz to Liverpool gathering pace due to Bayern mishap’: ‘Dropped the ball’

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz amid a major error from Bayern Munich.

The Reds are set to beat the Bundesliga champions to the 22-year-old’s signature, while the financial details of Wirtz’s potential move to Anfield have already emerged.

The Germany international has enjoyed a strong season with Leverkusen, scoring 10 goals and creating 10 assists in 31 top-flight appearances.

Liverpool are also set to sign Wirtz’s teammate Jeremie Frimpong, amid their efforts to sign a Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement.

Bayern Munich accused of dropping the ball as Liverpool close in on Wirtz

While Arne Slot’s men are keen on signing Wirtz, he has also been subject to interest from Vincent Kompany’s side.

But speaking live on talkSPORT [25 May], Andy Brassell outlined: “Liverpool’s a great choice for him, but Bayern have dropped the ball to an extent because Wirtz was definitely interested, his father met with (Bayern honorary president) Uli Hoeness quite a few times, and they seemed to be getting on fine.

“But I think Bayern were trying to lowball Leverkusen and assumed that Wirtz would just bash the doors to get his way there, and he hasn’t done that.

“His dad’s his agent, they’re close family. If Liverpool get him, this is an absolutely great pick-up.”

Wirtz’s most recent goal for Leverkusen came during a 2-2 draw with Freiburg in the Bundesliga on 4 May.

Liverpool set to sell Kostas Tsimikas

After winning the Premier League title in his first season in charge at Anfield, Slot is intent on further strengthening his squad this summer, hence the Merseyside outfit’s interest in the likes of Wirtz and Frimpong.

But while the Leverkusen duo would bolster Liverpool’s chances of winning more silverware next term, the Reds will also look to sell some of their current assets as Slot looks to reshape his squad.

With that in mind, as exclusively revealed by Football Insider, Leeds United are ready to sign defender Kostas Tsimikas from Liverpool.

The Whites are vying to strengthen their ranks ahead of their Premier League return, while the Greece international remains behind fellow left-back Andy Robertson in Slot’s pecking order.

Furthermore, Liverpool have also eyed a move for Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez, who has impressed in the Premier League for the Cherries this season.

While the Reds were deservedly crowned top-flight champions, Slot is keen on building his own squad, while signing Wirtz as well as selling Tsimikas could play a key role in that.

Meanwhile, former Leicester boss Martin Allen gave Liverpool News 247 his verdict on whether the Anfield club should sell Robertson.
