Florian Wirtz comes of age at Liverpool as Theo Walcott spots major ‘change’ vs Real Madrid
Florian Wirtz caught the eye as Liverpool produced a phenomenal display against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header saw Liverpool secure a 1-0 win over Real Madrid at Anfield, and it could have been more if Thibaut Courtois wasn’t in inspired form.
It was an outstanding all-round display by the Reds, with Conor Bradley receiving praise from Liverpool fans for pocketing Vinicius Junior.
Bradley was an immovable object in defence while providing infectious energy in possession and he wasn’t the only one.

Florian Wirtz impressed with his work rate vs Real Madrid
Florian Wirtz has endured a torrid time at Liverpool since completing his move from Bayer Leverkusen.
The 22-year-old has struggled to adapt to the increase in workload from his time in Germany, and as a result, witnessed his form suffer.
Yet, despite failing to score or assist in any of his 10 Premier League matches, Arne Slot selected him to start on the left wing against Real Madrid, and he impressed.
Wirtz used the ball incredibly well after finding himself in pockets of space, while his ability to float across the front line made him difficult to pick up.
Not only that, but the German international also demonstrated his work rate by tracking back to help Andy Robertson, and that is a key ‘change’ Theo Walcott noticed on the night.
“I was pleased with [Florian] Wirtz tonight,” Walcott said on Prime Video. “I was really pleased with his work rate because I was trying to speak about that before the game, just to say that is the part he needs to change, and I felt he did that today.”

Wirtz shows his best attributes vs Real Madrid
Wirtz was brought to Liverpool for his versatility, having played anywhere across the front line during his time at Leverkusen.
But during a period when the Reds have lacked continuity, they arguably unlocked his best position against Real, and that is cutting in from the left.
The German relished his defensive responsibility by running back for his team, and he always looked like making something happen in possession.
Wirtz made five key passes in the game, the most of any player on the pitch, and that just proved what an influence he had on the contest.
Now, Slot has to decide whether to start Wirtz against Manchester City on Sunday or throw Cody Gakpo back into the left wing role.
