Forget Defoe: The new Thierry Henry will be a far better West Ham January signing

COMMENT By Emma Sanders

Moussa Dembele would be a much better January signing for West Ham than Jermain Defoe.

The 20-year-old Celtic star is wanted by a number of top clubs but West Ham have, according to the Insider column on the club’s official website, made a £20million bid for the striker and it could be the best move they have made in January.

Dembele was dubbed the next Thierry Henry when he followed the Arsenal legend in moving from his native France to London, albeit at the even earlier age of 16.

The striker possesses similar qualities to his French idol and he hopes to become an international star like Henry, which his performances so far this season have suggested is possible.

The youngster has already netted 19 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic and he has the potential to achieve great things in the Premier League.

West Ham have been linked with a high-profile move for Jermain Defoe in January too and Sky Sports news reporter Kaveh Solkehol claimed the club made a £6 million bid for the striker on Wednesday.

While Defoe is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, he does not have as bright a future as Dembele and at the age of 34 it would be stretching credulity for him to be considered anything other than a short-term answer to the Hammers’ goalscoring dilemma.

Dembele has great pace, an exquisite touch and an eye for goal and all of those qualities could be exactly what West Ham need to achieve European qualification.

In other West Ham news, the club suffered a set-back in the pursuit of this defender.
